Overview
De Quervain's tenosynovitis is inflammation of the tendons that move the thumb. It's especially common in new mothers (lifting babies) and people who type or scroll on phones for long hours.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Pain at the thumb side of the wrist
- Pain when lifting a baby or pouring
- Swelling near the base of the thumb
- Pain spreading up the forearm
- Positive Finkelstein test on examination
Treatment Options
Thumb Spica Splint
Rest the inflamed tendons during daily tasks.
Corticosteroid Injection
Highly effective — most patients improve after one injection.
Activity Modification
Adjusting baby-lifting and phone use technique.
Rehabilitation
Stretching and strengthening once pain settles.
